The Kowalevski Property

The Kowalevski Property

Auteure: Vadim B. Kuznetsov

Nombre de pages: 232

This book is a collection of survey articles on several topics related to the general notion of integrability. It stems from a workshop on ''Mathematical Methods of Regular Dynamics'' dedicated to Sophie Kowalevski. Leading experts introduce corresponding areas in depth. The book provides a broad overview of research, from the pioneering work of the nineteenth century to the developments of the 1970s through the present. The book begins with two historical papers by R. L. Cooke onKowalevski's life and work. Following are 15 research surveys on integrability issues in differential and algebraic geometry, classical complex analysis, discrete mathematics, spinning tops, Painleve equations, global analysis on manifolds, special functions, etc. It concludes with Kowalevski's famouspaper published in Acta Mathematica in 1889, ''Sur le probleme de la rotation d'un corps solide autour d'un point fixe''. The book is suitable for graduate students in pure and applied mathematics, the general mathematical audience studying integrability, and research mathematicians interested in differential and algebraic geometry, analysis, and special functions.

Collected Papers of Yoz“ Matsushima

Collected Papers of Yoz“ Matsushima

Auteure: Yoz? Matsushima

Nombre de pages: 788

In the past thirty years, differential geometry has undergone an enormous change with infusion of topology, Lie theory, complex analysis, algebraic geometry and partial differential equations. Professor Matsushima played a leading role in this transformation by bringing new techniques of Lie groups and Lie algebras into the study of real and complex manifolds. This volume is a collection of all the 46 papers written by him.

Lectures on Probability Theory and Statistics

Lectures on Probability Theory and Statistics

Auteure: Sergio Albeverio , Walter Schachermayer

Nombre de pages: 298

In World Mathematical Year 2000 the traditional St. Flour Summer School was hosted jointly with the European Mathematical Society. Sergio Albeverio reviews the theory of Dirichlet forms, and gives applications including partial differential equations, stochastic dynamics of quantum systems, quantum fields and the geometry of loop spaces. The second text, by Walter Schachermayer, is an introduction to the basic concepts of mathematical finance, including the Bachelier and Black-Scholes models. The fundamental theorem of asset pricing is discussed in detail. Finally Michel Talagrand, gives an overview of the mean field models for spin glasses. This text is a major contribution towards the proof of certain results from physics, and includes a discussion of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick and the p-spin interaction models.

Singularity Theory and its Applications

Singularity Theory and its Applications

Auteure: David Mond , James Montaldi

Nombre de pages: 410

A workshop on Singularities, Bifurcation and Dynamics was held at Warwick in July 1989 as part of a year-long symposium on Singularity Theory and its applications. The proceedings fall into two halves: Volume I mainly on connections with algebraic geometry and volume II on connections with dynamical systems theory, bifurcation theory, and applications in the sciences. The papers are orginal research, stimulated by the symposium and workshops: All have been refereed, and none will appear elsewhere. The main topic, deformation theory, is represented by several papers on descriptions of the bases of versal deformations, and several more on descriptions of the generic fibres. Other topics include stratifications, and applications to differential geometry.

Séminaire de Probabilités XXXVII

Séminaire de Probabilités XXXVII

Auteure: Jacques Azéma , Michel Émery , Michel Ledoux , Marc Yor

Nombre de pages: 468

The 37th Séminaire de Probabilités contains A. Lejay's advanced course which is a pedagogical introduction to works by T. Lyons and others on stochastic integrals and SDEs driven by deterministic rough paths. The rest of the volume consists of various articles on topics familiar to regular readers of the Séminaires, including Brownian motion, random environment or scenery, PDEs and SDEs, random matrices and financial random processes.

Collected Papers I

Auteure: Serge Lang

Nombre de pages: 562

Serge Lang is not only one of the top mathematicians of our time, but also an excellent writer. He has made innumerable and invaluable contributions in diverse fields of mathematics and was honoured with the Cole Prize by the American Mathematical Society as well as with the Prix Carriere by the French Academy of Sciences. Here, 83 of his research papers are collected in four volumes, ranging over a variety of topics of interest to many readers.

Séminaire de Probabilités XXXII

Séminaire de Probabilités XXXII

Auteure: Jacques Azema , Michel Emery , Michel Ledoux , Marc Yor

Nombre de pages: 435

All the papers in the volume are original research papers, discussing fundamental properties of stochastic processes. The topics under study (martingales, filtrations, path properties, etc.) represent an important part of the current research performed in 1996-97 by various groups of probabilists in France and abroad.

Acoustics and the Performance of Music connects scientific understandings of acoustics with practical applications to musical performance. Of central importance are the tonal characteristics of musical instruments and the singing voice including detailed representations of directional characteristics. Furthermore, room acoustical concerns related to concert halls and opera houses are considered. Based on this, suggestions are made for musical performance. Included are seating arrangements within the orchestra and adaptations of performance techniques to the performance environment. In the presentation we dispense with complicated mathematical connections and deliberately aim for conceptual explanations accessible to musicians, particularly for conductors. The graphical representations of the directional dependence of sound radiation by musical instruments and the singing voice are unique. Since the first edition was published in 1978, this book has been completely revised and rewritten to include current research. This translation corresponds to the latest (fifth) German edition (2004), which has become a standard reference work for audio engineers and scientists. Acoustics and...
