It IS About Islam

It IS About Islam

Auteure: Glenn Beck

Nombre de pages: 272

Glenn Beck, the New York Times bestselling author of The Great Reset, exposes the real truth behind the roots of Islamic extremism in Muslim teachings in this sharply insightful handbook that debunks commonly held assumptions about Islam and the dream of a renewed caliphate. From the barbarians of ISIS to the terror tactics of Al-Qaeda and its offshoots, to the impending threat of a nuclear Iran, those motivated by extreme fundamentalist Islamic faith have the power to endanger and kill millions. The conflict with them will not end until we face the truth about those who find their inspiration and justification in the religion itself. Drawing on quotes from the Koran and the hadith, as well as from leaders of ISIS, Al Qaeda, and the Muslim Brotherhood, Glenn Beck seeks to expose the true origins of Islamic extremism as well as the deadly theological motivations behind these agencies of destruction. Using the same unique no-holds-barred style from his bestselling books Control and Conform, Glenn Beck offers straight facts and history about the fundamental beliefs that inspire so many to kill.

Transformations

Transformations

Auteure: Helen Schwartzman

Nombre de pages: 395

Writing a book about play leads to wondering. In writing this book, I wondered first if it would be taken seriously and then if it might be too serious. Eventually, I realized that these concerns were cast in terms of the major dichotomy that I wished to question, that is, the very perva sive and very inaccurate division that Western cultures make between play and seriousness (or play and work, fantasy and reality, and so forth). The study of play provides researchers with a special arena for re-thinking this opposition, and in this book an attempt is made to do this by reviewing and evaluating studies of children's transformations (their play) in relation to the history of anthropologists' transformations (their theories). While studying play, I have wondered in the company of many individuals. I would first like to thank my husband, John Schwartzman, for acting as both my strongest supporter and, as an anthropological colleague, my severest critic. His sense of nonsense is always novel as well as instructive. I am also very grateful to Linda Barbera-Stein for her Sherlock Holmes style help in locating obscure references, checking and cross-checking information, and patience and...

New Studies in the History of American Slavery

New Studies in the History of American Slavery

Auteure: Edward E. Baptist , Stephanie M. H. Camp

Nombre de pages: 322

These essays, by some of the most prominent young historians writing about slavery, fill gaps in our understanding of such subjects as enslaved women, the Atlantic and internal slave trades, the relationships between Indians and enslaved people, and enslavement in Latin America. Inventive and stimulating, the essays model the blending of methods and styles that characterizes the new cultural history of slavery’s social, political, and economic systems. Several common themes emerge from the volume, among them the correlation between race and identity; the meanings contained in family and community relationships, gender, and life’s commonplaces; and the literary and legal representations that legitimated and codified enslavement and difference. Such themes signal methodological and pedagogical shifts in the field away from master/slave or white/black race relations models toward perspectives that give us deeper access to the mental universe of slavery. Topics of the essays range widely, including European ideas about the reproductive capacities of African women and the process of making race in the Atlantic world, the contradictions of the assimilation of enslaved African...

Call Me Ishmael

Call Me Ishmael

Auteure: Patrick Shea

Nombre de pages: 179

In the summer of 2008, Brooklyn elementary school teacher and musician Patrick Shea set two goals for himself-to read Moby-Dick, and to write a song every day for two months. Those two goals quickly merged to become to beginning of the Call Me Ishmael project. Three years later, Shea had written, recorded, and blogged about all 135 chapters of Moby-Dick, plus the epilogue. This book contains the lyrics to all 136 songs from the project. The book also includes an introduction to the project as a whole, and an afterword for each volume of songs, written by the author. "Patrick Shea's songs are deeply insightful responses to Melville's masterpiece. They illuminate the power of Moby-Dick and enrich our experience of that remarkable novel. Shea understands that, at its heart, Moby-Dick is an orchestral work. Its chords resonate throughout Shea's lyrics." --Bill Kelly, President of the CUNY Graduate Center

Cultural Studies Review

Cultural Studies Review

Auteure: Chris Healy And Stephen Muecke (eds)

Nombre de pages: 227

The October 2008 Cultural Studies Review is a special issue focusing on cultures of panic, particularly recent examples of moral panic arising from issues of race, gender and sexuality. The diverse essays deal with 'men of Middle Eastern appearance', the trial of Private Kovko, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the use of Ritalin, concerns around children and sexuality in Australia, and arts funding in the United States during the 'culture wars'. The moral panic has centrally to do with the behaviour of crowds, particularly the virtual crowds created by the mass media. It's a mechanism of expulsion, and thus at the same time of group solidarity. It's also a particularly powerful genre of the tabloid media: in its identification and shaming of deviant social groups it rigidly defines and reinforces moral norms, and is complicit with political strategies of consolidation and othering which create and depend on a sense of horror at refugees who wilfully throw their children overboard or push in to the front of the 'queue', at paedophiles grooming children over the internet, at drug-crazed criminals and bingeing teenagers... The challenge is to move beyond the realisation that moral ...

Race and the Crisis of Humanism

Race and the Crisis of Humanism

Auteure: Kay Anderson

Nombre de pages: 242

The idea that humankind constituted a unity, albeit at different stages of 'development', was in the 19th century challenged with a new way of thinking. The 'savagery' of certain races was no longer regarded as a stage in their progress towards 'civilisation', but as their permanent state. What caused this shift? In Kay Anderson's provocative new account, she argues that British colonial encounters in Australia from the late 1700s with the apparently unimproved condition of the Australian Aborigine, viewed against an understanding of 'humanity' of the time (that is, as characterised by separation from nature), precipitated a crisis in existing ideas of what it meant to be human. This lucid, intelligent and persuasive argument will be necessary reading for all scholars and upper-level students interested in the history and theories of 'race', critical human geography, anthropology, and Australian and environmental studies.

Savage Visit

Savage Visit

Auteure: Kate Fullagar

Nombre de pages: 269

In eighteenth-century Britain, the appearance of “savages” from the New World provoked intense fascination. Though such people had been arriving periodically for decades, it was only then that the “savage visit” became a sensation. Using a wealth of sources, Kate Fullagar shows why the phenomenon grew and how it related to bitter debates over the morality of imperial expansion.

Federal Anti-Indian Law

Federal Anti-Indian Law

Auteure: Peter P. D'errico

Nombre de pages: 270

Telling the crucial and under-studied story of the U.S. legal doctrines that underpin the dispossession and domination of Indigenous peoples, this book enhances global Indigenous movements for self-determination. In this wide-ranging historical study of federal Indian law-the field of U.S. law related to Native peoples-attorney and educator Peter P. d'Errico argues that the U.S. government's assertion of absolute prerogative and unlimited authority over Native peoples and their lands is actually a suspension of law. Combining a deep theoretical analysis of the law with a historical examination of its roots in Christian civilization, d'Errico presents a close reading of foundational legal cases and raises the possibility of revoking the doctrine of domination. The book's larger context is the increasing frequency of Indigenous conflicts with nation-states around the world as ecological crises caused by industrial extraction impinge drastically on Indigenous peoples' existences. D'Errico rethinks the role of law in the global order-imagining an Indigenous nomos of the earth, an order arising from peoples and places rather than the existing hegemony of states.

The Political Ideas of Thorstein Veblen

The Political Ideas of Thorstein Veblen

Auteure: Sidney Plotkin , Rick Tilman

Nombre de pages: 289

Thorstein Veblen is best known for his authorship of The Theory of the Leisure Class and The Theory of Business Enterprise, which made him a celebrated figure in the fields of economics and sociology at the turn of the twentieth century. In this book, Sidney Plotkin and Rick Tilman argue that in addition to his well-known work in these fields Veblen also made important—and until now overlooked—statements about politics. While Veblen's writings seldom mention politics, they are saturated with political ideas: about the relationship among war, executive power, and democracy; about the similarities between modern executive positions and monarchy; about the political influence of corporate power; about the symbolism of politics; and about many other issues. By demonstrating the deep relevance of Veblen's writings to today's political troubles, The Political Ideas of Thorstein Veblen offers an important reconsideration of a major American thinker.

Hollywood's Imperial Wars

Hollywood's Imperial Wars

Auteure: Armando José Prats

Nombre de pages: 333

When the Vietnam War punctured the myth of American military invincibility, Hollywood needed a new kind of war movie. The familiar triumphal narrative was relegated to history and, with it, the heroic legacy that had passed from one generation to the next for more than two hundred years. How Hollywood helped create and instill the American myth of heroic continuity, and how films revised that myth after the Vietnam War, is what Armando José Prats explores in Hollywood’s Imperial Wars. The book offers a new way of understanding the cultural and historical significance of Vietnam in relation to Hollywood’s earlier representations of Americans at war, from the mythic heroism of a film like Sands of Iwo Jima to the rupture of that myth in films such as The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, and Platoon. As early as the mid-1940s, Prats suggests, fears aroused by the Cold War were stirring anxieties about sustaining the heroic myth—anxieties reflected in the insistent, aggressive patriotism in films of the period. In this context, Prats considers the immeasurable cultural importance of John Wayne, the cinematic apotheosis of wartime valor and righteousness, whose patriotism was...

Fighting at the Legal Boundaries

Fighting at the Legal Boundaries

Auteure: Kenneth Watkin

Nombre de pages: 729

Fighting at the Legal Boundaries offers a holistic approach towards the application of the various constitutive parts of international law. The author focuses on the interaction between the applicable bodies of law by exploring whether their boundaries are improperly drawn, or are being interpreted in too rigid a fashion. Emphasis is placed on the disconnect that can occur between theory and practice regarding how these legal regimes are applied and interact with one another. Through a number of case studies, Fighting at the Legal Boundaries explores how the threat posed by insurgents, terrorists, and transnational criminal gangs often occurs not only at the point where these bodies of law interact, but also in situations where there is significant overlap. In this regard, the exercise of the longstanding right of States to defend nationals, including the conduct of operations such as hostage rescue, can involve the application of human rights based law enforcement norms to counter threats transcending the conflict spectrum.

Reading for Liberalism

Reading for Liberalism

Auteure: Stephen J. Mexal

Nombre de pages: 319

Founded in 1868, the Overland Monthly was a San Francisco–based literary magazine whose mix of humor, pathos, and romantic nostalgia for a lost frontier was an immediate sensation on the East Coast. Due in part to a regional desire to attract settlers and financial investment, the essays and short fiction published in the Overland Monthly often portrayed the American West as a civilized evolution of, and not a savage regression from, eastern bourgeois modernity and democracy. Stories about the American West have for centuries been integral to the way we imagine freedom, the individual, and the possibility for alternate political realities. Reading for Liberalism examines the shifting literary and narrative construction of liberal selfhood in California in the late nineteenth century through case studies of a number of western American writers who wrote for the Overland Monthly, including Noah Brooks, Ina Coolbrith, Bret Harte, Jack London, John Muir, and Frank Norris, among others. Reading for Liberalism argues that Harte, the magazine’s founding editor, and the other members of the Overland group critiqued and reimagined the often invisible fabric of American freedom. Cascades of Violence

Cascades of Violence

Auteure: John Braithwaite , Bina D'costa

Nombre de pages: 707

As in the cascading of water, violence and nonviolence can cascade down from commanding heights of power (as in waterfalls), up from powerless peripheries, and can undulate to spread horizontally (flowing from one space to another). As with containing water, conflict cannot be contained without asking crucial questions about which variables might cause it to cascade from the top-down, bottom up and from the middle-out. The book shows how violence cascades from state to state. Empirical research has shown that nations with a neighbor at war are more likely to have a civil war themselves (Sambanis 2001). More importantly in the analysis of this book, war cascades from hot spot to hot spot within and between states (Autesserre 2010, 2014). The key to understanding cascades of hot spots is in the interaction between local and macro cleavages and alliances (Kalyvas 2006). The analysis exposes the folly of asking single-level policy questions like do the benefits and costs of a regime change in Iraq justify an invasion? We must also ask what other violence might cascade from an invasion of Iraq? The cascades concept is widespread in the physical and biological sciences with cascades in...

States of Imitation

States of Imitation

Auteure: Patrice Ladwig , Ricardo Roque

Nombre de pages: 222

Late Western colonialism often relied on the practice of imitating indigenous forms of rule in order to maintain power; conversely, indigenous polities could imitate Western sociopolitical forms to their own benefit. Drawing on historical ethnographic studies of colonialism in Asia and Africa, States of Imitation examines how the colonial state attempted to administer, control, and integrate its indigenous subjects through mimetic governmentality, as well the ways indigenous states adopted these imitative practices to establish reciprocal ties with, or to resist the presence of, the colonial state.

Formations of United States Colonialism

Formations of United States Colonialism

Auteure: Alyosha Goldstein

Nombre de pages: 464

Bridging the multiple histories and present-day iterations of U.S. settler colonialism in North America and its overseas imperialism in the Caribbean and the Pacific, the essays in this groundbreaking volume underscore the United States as a fluctuating constellation of geopolitical entities marked by overlapping and variable practices of colonization. By rethinking the intertwined experiences of Native Americans, Puerto Ricans, Chamorros, Filipinos, Hawaiians, Samoans, and others subjected to U.S. imperial rule, the contributors consider how the diversity of settler claims, territorial annexations, overseas occupations, and circuits of slavery and labor—along with their attendant forms of jurisprudence, racialization, and militarism—both facilitate and delimit the conditions of colonial dispossession. Drawing on the insights of critical indigenous and ethnic studies, postcolonial theory, critical geography, ethnography, and social history, this volume emphasizes the significance of U.S. colonialisms as a vital analytic framework for understanding how and why the United States is what it is today. Contributors. Julian Aguon, Joanne Barker, Berenika Byszewski, Jennifer Nez...

Go, Go, Go, Said the Bird

Go, Go, Go, Said the Bird

Auteure: Richard Oerton

Nombre de pages: 163

Taking its title from lines in T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets – “Go, go, go, said the bird: human kind cannot bear very much reality” – this book sets out to expose some of the realities which, at this stage of our evolution, human beings cannot bear to accept. Successive chapters examine rationality, conscience, religion, perception, sexuality, free will, moral responsibility and crime, pointing out the incomprehension which mars our approach to each topic. One of the book’s themes is that we are still, below the surface, a savage species, clinging to our misconceptions because they liberate and justify our cruelty to one another. Despite its deadly serious and controversial approach, the book is enlivened by humour, personal stories, quotes from others and bits of poetry. It is not academic but readily accessible to the general reader. In the last chapter, the author sums up by saying that, although the human species now is what it is, some of us can imagine a better one: “A species that isn’t irrational, ignorant, credulous, uncomprehending, self-defeating, ill at ease with its sexuality, mired in contradictory beliefs, impelled by a savagery let loose by...

Fighting at the Legal Boundaries

Fighting at the Legal Boundaries

Auteure: Kenneth Watkin Omm, Cd, Qc

Nombre de pages: 729

The international law governing armed conflict is at a crossroads, as the formal framework of laws designed to control the exercise of self-defense and conduct of inter-state conflict finds itself confronted with violent 21st Century disputes of a very different character. Military practitioners who seek to stay within the bounds of international law often find themselves applying bodies of law-IHRL, IHL, ICL-in an exclusionary fashion, and adherence to those boundaries can lead to a formal and often rigid application of the law that does not adequately address contemporary security challenges. Through a number of case studies, Fighting at the Legal Boundaries explores how the threat posed by insurgents,...

Hegel's Theory of Responsibility

Hegel's Theory of Responsibility

Auteure: Mark Alznauer

Nombre de pages: 229

A crucial aspect of Hegel's practical philosophy is his theory of responsibility. This theory is both original and radical in its emphasis on the role and importance of social and historical conditions as a context for our actions. But even those who agree that there is something valuable in Hegel's emphasis on sociality are not in agreement about what that something is or about how Hegel argues for it. Mark Alznauer offers the first book-length account of the structure of the theory and its place within Hegel's thought as a whole. The reader is carefully walked through the psychological, social and historical aspects of responsibility in Hegel's texts. The book demonstrates that attention to the concept of responsibility reveals the true nature of Hegel's controversial claims about the inherent sociality of human action.

A Madman’s Gospel

A Madman’s Gospel

Auteure: Jay T. Attebery Aacs Bstm Mncm Mism

Nombre de pages: 149

Satan is desperate to take God’s place in our lives. Isaiah wrote of Satan’s manifesto, describing it as having a foundation of pride. Lucifer wanted exaltation above God’s throne, entrusted with the authority to control and speak the governing law to us and to Jesus Christ. But believers know that Satan can never take Christ’s place in the lives of humans; he can only manipulate and offer misrepresentations of Jesus. In this book, the author examines our tendency to fall into despair and urges us to remember David, who knew he needed the power of God’s Holy Spirit to restore his life. He looks to Scripture to reveal what every believer must confront to deepen their faith, answering questions such as: • Why is it necessary for believers to study the Bible? • What causes us to withdraw from the presence of God? • What steps can someone take to align their life with God’s teachings? • What is the Holy Spirit's job in salvation? Other topics include the beginning of sin and its impact on today’s world, how to know you are really saved, and the nature and process of repentance.

Les Marines

Les Marines

Auteure: Nicolas Aubin

An accessible, balanced undergraduate textbook on anthropological theory. Jerry D. Moore's Visions of Culture presents students with a brief, readable treatment of theoretical developments in the field from the days of Tylor and Morgan through contemporary postmodernists and cultural materialists. An assessment of the scholar's impact on contemporary theorizing is presented, along with numerous explanatory examples, illuminating quotes from the theorists' writings, and a description of the broader intellectual setting in which these anthropologists worked. An ideal book for classes on the theory or the history of anthropology.
