The Future of Small Telescopes in the New Millennium

The Future of Small Telescopes in the New Millennium

Auteure: Terry D. Oswalt

Nombre de pages: 1016

The motivation for these volumes is to provide a vision for the future of small telescopes. While this is an admirable task, ultimately I believe that as happens all the time in science - the prognostications will be overtaken by a rapidly changing scientific reality. As Virginia Trimble points out in chapter 1, the kinds of big questions that face us as astronomers today are rather different than the ones that drove the construction of astronomical facilities through much of the twentieth century. Right now, it appears that small telescopes will not have a lot of influence in answering those questions, though they will of course contribute enormously to the many issues discussed throughout the three volumes. Weare on the verge of opening a whole new parameter space that may revolutionize the way we think of small telescopes and their role in astronomy - the domain of the rapidly variable sky. While the LSST is the most prominent example, it is a long way in the future. Nemiroff & Rafert (chapter 2) consider the value of monitoring large parts of the sky on a continuous basis, using technology similar to a webcam. They have installed their CONCAM2 at four locations, including Kitt ...

Number Theory for the Millennium II

Number Theory for the Millennium II

Auteure: Bruce Berndt

Nombre de pages: 378

Building on the tradition of an outstanding series of conferences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the organizers attracted an international group of scholars to open the new Millennium with a conference that reviewed the current state of number theory research and pointed to future directions in the field. The conference was the largest general number theory conference in recent history, featuring a total of 159 talks, with the plenary lectures given by George Andrews, Jean Bourgain, Kevin Ford, Ron Graham, Andrew Granville, Roger Heath-Brown, Christopher Hooley, Winnie Li, Kumar Murty, Mel Nathanson, Ken Ono, Carl Pomerance, Bjorn Poonen, Wolfgang Schmidt, Chris Skinner, K. Soundararajan, Robert Tijdeman, Robert Vaughan, and Hugh Williams. The Proceedings Volumes of the conference review some of the major number theory achievements of this century and to chart some of the directions in which the subject will be heading during the new century. These volumes will serve as a useful reference to researchers in the area and an introduction to topics of current interest in number theory for a general audience in mathematics.

Silicon-Based Structural Ceramics for the New Millennium

Silicon-Based Structural Ceramics for the New Millennium

Auteure: Manuel E. Brito , Hua-tay Lin , Kevin Plucknett

Nombre de pages: 276

This volume focuses on recent scientific and technological developments in silicon-based (i.e., silicon nitride, SiAlONs, silicon carbide, silicon oxynitride) structural ceramics. Authors from academia and industry assess the current state of the art in slilicon-based structual ceramics. Industrial case studies are advocated to highlight the development and application of these materials in real engineering environments. Proceedings of the symposium held at the 104th Annual Meeting of The American Ceramic Society, April 28-May1, 2002 in Missouri; Ceramic Transactions, Volume 142.

Flavor Physics for the Millennium

Flavor Physics for the Millennium

Auteure: Jonathan L. Rosner

Nombre de pages: 883

This book is devoted to the broad subject of flavor physics, embracing the question of what distinguishes one type of elementary particles from another. The articles range from the forefront of formal theory (treating the physics of extra dimensions) to details of particle detectors. Although special emphasis is placed on the physics of kaons, charmed and beauty particles, top quarks, and neutrinos, the articles also dealing with electroweak physics, quantum chromodynamics, supersymmetry, and dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. Violations of fundamental symmetries such as time reversal invariance are discussed in the context of neutral kaons, beauty particles, electric dipole moments, and parity violation in atoms. The physics of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and of quark masses are described in some detail, both from the standpoint of present and future experimental knowledge and from a more fundamental viewpoint, where physicists are still searching for the correct theory.

Scalability Issues in Authorship Attribution

Scalability Issues in Authorship Attribution

Auteure: Kim Luyckx

Nombre de pages: 197

Provides an in-depth and systematic study of the so-called scalability issues in authorship attribution -- the task that aims to identify the author of a text, given a model of authorial style based on texts of known authorship. Computational authorship attribution does not rely on in-depth reading, but rather automates the process. This book investigates the behavior of a text categorization approach to the task when confronted with scalability issues. By addressing the issues of experimental design, data size, and author set size, the dissertation demonstrates whether the approach taken is valid in experiments with limited or sufficient data, and with small or large sets of authors.

The GirlFrenzy Millennial

Auteure: Erica Smith

Nombre de pages: 104

A collection of articles, comic strips, and photostories in the traditional Girls Annual style but for adult readers. BORON CHEMISTRY AT THE MILLENNIUM

BORON CHEMISTRY AT THE MILLENNIUM

Auteure: R. Bruce King

Nombre de pages: 480

Hardbound. The chemistry of boron exhibits many unique features, demonstrating exceptional ability in molecular, ionic, and solid state environments to form very stable compounds exhibiting structures based on icosahedral and other deltahedral units. In addition, boron forms a variety of very stable mononuclear tetrahedral as well as polynuclear cage anions including some of the most weakly coordinating anions currently known. The hydride chemistry of boron is also unusually rich providing diverse examples of multicenter bonding, which have stimulated numerous theoretical and computational studies. These features of boron chemistry can be considered to be as distinctive as the unique features of the much better known chemistry of carbon in organic compounds including the exceptional catenation ability of carbon as well as the wide range of compounds containing stable benzenoid and related structural units. These and other special features of boron c
