Rien à envier au reste du monde

Rien à envier au reste du monde

Auteure: Barbara Demick

Alors...

East Asia Beyond the History Wars

East Asia Beyond the History Wars

Auteure: Tessa Morris-suzuki

Nombre de pages: 226

East Asia is now the world’s economic powerhouse, but ghosts of history continue to trouble relations between the key countries of the region, particularly between Japan, China and the two Koreas. Unhappy legacies of Japan’s military expansion in pre-war Asia prompt on-going calls for apologies, while conflicts over ownership of cultural heritage cause friction between China and Korea, and no peace treaty has ever been signed to conclude the Korean War. For over a decade, the region’s governments and non-government groups have sought to confront the ghosts of the past by developing paths to reconciliation. Focusing particularly on popular culture and grassroots action, East Asia beyond the History Warsexplores these East Asian approaches to historical reconciliation. This book examines how Korean historians from North and South exchange ideas about national history, how Chinese film-makers reframe their views of the war with Japan, and how Japanese social activists develop grassroots reconciliation projects with counterparts from Korea and elsewhere. As the volume’s studies of museums, monuments and memorials show, East Asian public images of modern history are changing,...

Intrepid Americans: Bold Koreans - Early Korean Trade, Concessions and Entrepreneurship

Auteure: Donald G. Southerton

Nombre de pages: 169

Intrepid Americans: Bold Koreans-Early Korean Trade, Concessions, And Entrepreneurship is a fascinating study of noteworthy interactions and significant events in the early development of U.S.-Korean relations. With relevancy in looking at contemporary South Korea, the reader will gain an understanding into how radically Korea's economy has transformed over the last century. Within the book, author Don Southerton provides captivating insights into the birth of modern South Korean entrepreneurialism and commerce. These glimpses presented through numerous photographs, illustrations, narratives, commentary, and comprehensive appendixes will give the reader a greater appreciation into the recent South Korean economic progress. A noteworthy feature of the book is the role played by American businessmen and Protestant missionaries on the peninsula. In fact, Southerton points out that Americans along with bringing new technology to Korea, heralded capitalism and promoted entrepreneurship-characteristics that reemerged in South Korea during the last quarter of the twentieth century and have spurred phenomenal economic and business development.

Frontiers of Memory in the Asia-Pacific

Frontiers of Memory in the Asia-Pacific

Auteure: Shu-mei Huang , Hyun Kyung Lee , Edward Vickers

Nombre de pages: 259

Frontiers of Memory in the Asia-Pacific explores the making and consumption of conflict-related heritage throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Contributing to a growing literature on ‘difficult heritage’, this collection advances our understanding of how places of pain, shame, oppression, and trauma have been appropriated and refashioned as ‘heritage’ in a number of societies in contemporary East and Southeast Asia and Oceania. The authors analyse how the repackaging of difficult pasts as heritage can serve either to reinforce borders, transcend them, or even achieve both simultaneously, depending on the political agendas that inform the heritage-making process. They also examine the ways in which these processes respond to colonialism, decolonization, and nationalism. The volume shows how efforts to preserve various sites of ‘difficult heritage’ can involve the construction of new borders in the mind between what is commemorated and what is often deliberately obscured or forgotten. Taken together, the studies presented here suggest new directions for comparative research into difficult heritage across Asia and beyond, applying an interdisciplinary and critical...

Analytic Trends in Mathematical Physics

Analytic Trends in Mathematical Physics

Auteure: Houssam Abdul-rahman , Robert Sims , Amanda Young

Nombre de pages: 210

This volume contains the proceedings of the Arizona School of Analysis and Mathematical Physics, held from March 5–9, 2018, at the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona. A main goal of this school was to introduce graduate students and postdocs to exciting topics of current research that are both influenced by physical intuition and require the use of cutting-edge mathematics. The articles in this volume reflect recent progress and innovative techniques developed within mathematical physics. Two works investigate spectral gaps of quantum spin systems. Specifically, Abdul-Rahman, Lemm, Lucia, Nachtergaele, and Young consider decorated AKLT models, and Lemm demonstrates a finite-size criterion for D D-dimensional models. Bachmann, De Roeck, and Fraas summarize a recent proof of the adiabatic theorem, while Bachmann, Bols, De Roeck, and Fraas discuss linear response for interacting Hall insulators. Models on general graphs are the topic of the articles by Fischbacher, on higher spin XXZ, and by Latushkin and Sukhtaiev, on an index theorem for Schrödinger operators. Probabilistic applications are the focus of the articles by DeMuse and Yin, on exponential random graphs, by Saenz,...

Random Growth Models

Random Growth Models

Auteure: Michael Damron , Firas Rassoul-agha , Timo Seppäläinen

Nombre de pages: 274

The study of random growth models began in probability theory about 50 years ago, and today this area occupies a central place in the subject. The considerable challenges posed by these models have spurred the development of innovative probability theory and opened up connections with several other parts of mathematics, such as partial differential equations, integrable systems, and combinatorics. These models also have applications to fields such as computer science, biology, and physics. This volume is based on lectures delivered at the 2017 AMS Short Course “Random Growth Models”, held January 2–3, 2017 in Atlanta, GA. The articles in this book give an introduction to the most-studied models; namely, first- and last-passage percolation, the Eden model of cell growth, and particle systems, focusing on the main research questions and leading up to the celebrated Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. Topics covered include asymptotic properties of infection times, limiting shape results, fluctuation bounds, and geometrical properties of geodesics, which are optimal paths for growth.

Nombre de pages: 322
Asianisms

Asianisms

Auteure: Marc Frey , Nicola Spakowski

Nombre de pages: 293

At the core of this book is a seemingly simple question: What is Asia? In search of common historical roots, traditions and visions of political-cultural integration, first Japanese, then Chinese, Korean and Indian intellectuals, politicians and writers understood Asianisms as an umbrella for all conceptions, imaginations and processes which emphasized commonalities or common interests among different Asian regions and nations. This book investigates the multifarious discursive and material constructions of Asia within the region and in the West. It reconstructs regional constellations, intersections and relations in their national, transnational and global contexts. Moving far beyond the more well-known Japanese Pan-Asianism of the first half of the twentieth century, the chapters investigate visions of Asia that have sought to provide common meanings and political projects in efforts to trace, and construct, Asia as a united and common space of interaction. By tracing the imagination of civil society actors throughout Asia, the volume leaves behind state-centered approaches to regional integration and uncovers the richness and depth of complex identities within a large and...

The Cossack Struggle Against Communism, 1917-1945

The Cossack Struggle Against Communism, 1917-1945

Auteure: Brent Mueggenberg

Nombre de pages: 352

The downfall of tsarism in 1917 left the peoples of Russia facing an uncertain future. Nowhere were those anxieties felt more than among the Cossacks. The steppe horsemen had famously guarded the empire's frontiers, stampeded demonstrators in its cities, suppressed peasant revolts in the countryside and served as bodyguards to its rulers. Their way of life, intricately bound to the old order, seemed imperiled by the revolution and especially by the Bolshevik seizure of power. Many Cossacks took up arms against the Soviet regime, providing the anticommunist cause with some of its best warriors--as well as its most notorious bandits. This book chronicles their decades-long campaign against the Bolsheviks, from the tumultuous days of the Russian Civil War through the doldrums of foreign exile and finally to their fateful collaboration with the Third Reich.

The Koreas between China and Japan

The Koreas between China and Japan

Auteure: Lee Guen , Victor Teo

Nombre de pages: 228

Most discussions pertaining to the nuclear proliferation and reunification issues on the Korean Peninsula privilege the position and role played by the United States. In the first volume of its kind, this collection of essays presents the challenges faced by the Koreas against the context of the changing relations between China and Japan. Strategically nestled between these political giants, the Korean Peninsula has traditionally been “seen” as a sphere of influence by Tokyo and Beijing. Regardless of the escalating difficulties in recent Sino-Japanese relations, this volume argues that avoiding all-out conflict and ensuring a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula are certainly strategic goals that both China and Japan still share. Neither China nor Japan wishes to be dragged into a war started by North Korean belligerence, South Korean aspirations or American adventurism. However, despite alternating between political pressure and diplomatic efforts, Japan and China have found it extremely difficult to guide the tone and direction of politics in intra-Korea affairs. Conversely, both South and North Korea have been extremely adept at fending off any perceived attempts to influence...

Memory, Reconciliation, and Reunions in South Korea

Memory, Reconciliation, and Reunions in South Korea

Auteure: Nan Kim

Nombre de pages: 285

Winner of the 2019 Scott Bills Memorial Prize for Outstanding First Book in Peace History. Memory, Reconciliation, and Reunions in South Korea: Crossing the Divide explores the history and tells the story of the emotionally charged meetings that took place among family members who, after having lost all contact for over fifty years on opposite sides of the Korean divide, were temporarily reunited in a series of events beginning in 2000. During an unprecedented period of reconciliation between North and South Korea, those nationally televised reunions would prove to be the largest meetings held theretofore among civilians from the two states since the inter-Korean border was sealed following the end of active hostilities in 1953. Drawing on field research during the reunions as they happened, oral histories with family members who participated, interviews among government officials involved in the events' negotiation and planning, and observations of breakthrough developments at the turn of the millennium, this book narrates a grounded history of these pivotal events. The book further explores the implications of such intimate family encounters for the larger political and cultural ...

Reconstructing Ancient Korean History

Reconstructing Ancient Korean History

Auteure: Stella Xu

Nombre de pages: 249

This book examines the contested re-readings of “Korea” in early Chinese historical records and their influence on the formation of Korean-ness in later periods. The earliest written records on “Koreans” are found in Chinese documents produced during the Han dynasty, from the third century BCE to the third century CE. Since then, these early Chinese records have been used as primary sources for writing early Korean history in Korea, China, and Japan. This study analyzes the various reinterpretations and utilizations of these early records that became more diverse by the late nineteenth century, when the reconstruction of ancient history became a crucial part of the formation of Korean national consciousness. Korea’s modern historiography was complicated by a thirty-five year colonial experience (1910–1945) under Japan. During this period, Japanese colonial scholars attempted to depict Korean history as stagnant, heteronymous, and replete with factional strife, while Korean nationalist historians strove to construct an indigenous Korean nation in order to mobilize Koreans’ national consciousness and recover political sovereignty. While focused on Korea and Northeast...
