Mechanism of Action

Mechanism of Action

Auteure: David Gottlieb , Paul D. Shaw

Nombre de pages: 797

The idea for publishing these books on the mechanism of action and on the biosynthesis of antibiotics was born of frustration in our attempts to keep abreast of the literature. Gone were the years when we were able to keep a biblio graphy on antibiotics and feel confident that we could find everything that was being published on this subject. These fields of investigation were moving for ward so rapidly and were encompassing so wide a range of specialized areas in microbiology and chemistry that it was almost impossible to keep abreast of developments. In our naivete and enthusiasm, however, we were unaware that we were toying with an idea that might enmesh us, that we were creating an entity with a life of its own, that we were letting loose a Golom who instead of being our servant would be our master. That we set up ideals for these books is obvious; they would be current guides to developments and information in the areas of mechanism of action and bio synthesis of antibiotics. For almost every subject, we wished to enlist the aid of an investigator who himself had played a part in determining the nature of the phenomena that were being discussed. One concept for the books was...

Nombre de pages: 1388

Hardbound. Many health care providers are frequently dealing with problems related to the identification and interpretation of medicines and prescriptions of foreign origin. Health authorities, customs and travel agencies also encounter such problems, which are related to the increasing mobility of the European population. Thus the need for a European Drug Index is obvious. The EDI provides extended information for practitioners confronted with the enormous number of drug names available on the European pharmaceutical market. This market is increasing due to the rapidly changing palette of countries and economic restrictions in Europe. The listings have been derived from drug data sources from the increased number of participating countries in this second edition. Each item starts with a trade name, in alphabetical order, followed by (depending on the original source) dosage forms, strength, volume (if applicable), and generic name(s) of the active princi

Special Problems in Chemotherapy

Special Problems in Chemotherapy

Auteure: J. D. Williams , A. M. Geddes

Nombre de pages: 425

The International Society of Chemotherapy meets every two years to review progress in chemotherapy of infections and of malignant disease. Each meeting gets larger to encompass the extension of chemotherapy into new areas. In some instances, expansion has been rapid, for example in cephalosporins, pen icillins and combination chemotherapy of cancer - in others slow, as in the field of parasitology. New problems of resistance and untoward effects arise; reduction of host toxicity without loss of antitumour activity by new substances occupies wide attention. The improved results with cancer chemotherapy, es pecially in leukaemias, are leading to a greater prevalence of severe infection in patients so treated, pharmacokinetics of drugs in normal and diseased subjects is receiving increasing attention along with related problems of bioavailability and interactions between drugs. Meanwhile the attack on some of the major bacterial infections, such as gonorrhoea and tubercu losis, which were among the first infections to feel the impact of chemotherapy, still continue to be major world problems and are now under attack with new agents and new methods. From this wide field and the 1,000...
