Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Media Fandom

Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Media Fandom

Auteure: Dunn, Robert Andrew

Nombre de pages: 453

Leisure time today is driven by fandom. Once viewed as a social pariah, the fan and associated fandom as a whole has transformed into a popularized social construct researchers are still attempting to understand. Popular culture in the modern era is defined and dominated by the fan, and the basis of fandom has established its own identity across several platforms of media. As some forms of fandom have remained constant, including sports and cinema, other structures of fandom are emerging as the mass following of video games and cosplay are becoming increasingly prominent. Fandom has been established as an important facet in today’s society, and necessary research is required for understanding how fandom is shaping society as a whole. Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Media Fandom is a pivotal reference source that provides vital research that reviews some of the most exigent facets of today’s fandom and highlights understudied cultures of fandom as well as emerging intricacies of established fandom. While promoting topics such as esports, influencer culture, and marketing trends, this publication explores both qualitative and quantitative approaches as well as the methods of...

Transcending Patterns

Transcending Patterns

Auteure: Mariachiara Gasparini

Nombre de pages: 281

In Transcending Patterns: Silk Road Cultural and Artistic Interactions through Central Asian Textiles, Mariachiara Gasparini investigates the origin and effects of a textile-mediated visual culture that developed at the heart of the Silk Road between the seventh and fourteenth centuries. Through the analysis of the Turfan Textile Collection in the Museum of Asian Art in Berlin and more than a thousand textiles held in collections worldwide, Gasparini discloses and reconstructs the rich cultural entanglements along the Silk Road, between the coming of Islam and the rise of the Mongol Empire, from the Tarim to Mediterranean Basin. Exploring in detail the iconographic transfer between different agents and different media from Central Asian caves to South Italian churches, the author depicts and describes the movement and exchange of portable objects such as sculpture, wall painting, and silk fragments across the Asian continent and across the ages. Gasparini’s history offers critical perspectives that extend far beyond an outmoded notion of “Silk Road studies.” Her cross-media work shows readers how certain material cultures are connected not only by the physical routes they...

Union in Separation

Union in Separation

Auteure: Autori Vari

Nombre de pages: 546

Union in Separation presents a series of case studies on diasporic groups in the late medieval and early modern Mediterranean and Black Sea regions. It explores how Armenian, Byzantine/Greek, Florentine, Genoese, Hospitaller, Jewish, Mamluk, and Venetian communities characterized by diasporic identities and inserted into local contexts navigated religious and socio-ethnic boundaries as well as other categories of difference. The volume draws on a wide range of historical and social-scientific methods and offers new perspectives on the arbitration of difference in the wider eastern Mediterranean from Tana to Cairo and Marseille to Isfahan prior to the emergence of nation states. It provides not only an analytical toolbox for historical diaspora studies but also reveals how, under the looming threat of crusade and within the daily routines of trade, diasporic groups and their hosts negotiated modes of coexistence that oscillated between cooperation and conflict, integration and rejection, union and separation.

Zamansız

Auteure: Engin Akyürek

Nombre de pages: 130

Engin Akyürek'in ikinci öykü kitabı Zamansız, tam da kimsenin zamanının olmadığı zamanlara inat karşımızda. *** Tanışalı bir saat on üç dakika olmuştu. Nereden mi biliyorum? Zamanı düşünmeden her şeyimle orada olduğum bir an yaşamamıştım da ondan. *** Hissettiklerimi sindirmem için telefonun ekranına bakma ihtiyacı duymuştum. Âşık mı oluyordum, yoksa yeni tanıştığım birinin bilinmezliği beni bir yolculuğa mı davet ediyordu?

"Engin's stories take us to the old times when people got to know people by looking in their eyes, to touch people by talking to them, and to understand each other by listening. The times when the kids were still kids, when they started a ball game as soon as they found an empty field, when neighbors stopped by uninvited, holidays were celebrated all together, the happiness and sorrow shared by all." --Back cover

The Hippodrome of Constantinople

The Hippodrome of Constantinople

Auteure: Engin Akyürek

Nombre de pages: 135

The Hippodrome of Constantinople was constructed in the fourth century AD, by the Roman Emperor Constantine I, in his new capital. Throughout Byzantine history the Hippodrome served as a ceremonial, sportive and recreational center of the city; in the early period, it was used mainly as an arena for very popular, competitive, and occasionally violent chariot races, while the Middle Ages witnessed the imperial ceremonies coming to the fore gradually, although the races continued. The ceremonial and recreational role of the Hippodrome somehow continued during the Ottoman period. Being the oldest structure in the city, the Hippodrome has witnessed exciting chariot races, ceremonies glorifying victorious emperors as well as the charioteers, and the riots that shook the imperial authority. Today, looking to the remnants of the Hippodrome, one can imagine the glorious past of the site.
