Interpretation in/of the Seventeenth Century

Auteure: Pierre Zoberman

Nombre de pages: 450

Interpretation in/of the Seventeenth Century explores interpretation according to, and by, the seventeenth century, namely how intellectuals and officials conceived of interpretation, and how they read their world and its relationship to the past, and of the seventeenth century. As such, the volume examines both temporal relationships, such as current interpretations of the seventeenth century or interpretation of itself and the past by the seventeenth century, and transversal relations, including practices of reading, crossings from one genre to another, and translation. The comparative conception underlying the collection’s three main sections (“Culture and Interpretation”, “Interpretation and Literature”, and “Shifts and Perspectives”) allows for an in-depth examination of what could be meant in seventeenth-century France by interpretation—between exegesis and translation—and what interpretive practices characterized the culture of the period. What may the ceremonies organized on a more or less grandiose scale and with more or less clearly visible programmes by the Crown or various institutions have meant for the organizers and their audiences, given the...

Violence de l'interprétation (XVIe-XVIIe s.)

Auteure: Anne Duprat

Nombre de pages: 201

This collective essay examines the violence, both present and past, inherent in the act of interpreting texts produced in Early Modern Europe, during the trials of the Spanish Inquisition and in accusations of witchcraft or libertinage, and their resistance to it. Le livre analyse la violence qu’exerce, hier et aujourd’hui, l’interprétation sur des textes produits dans le cadre de procès en Inquisition, pour sorcellerie ou libertinage (Europe, XVIe et XVIIe siècle). Il interroge le sens de la résistance qu’ils opposent à cette violence.

Auteure: Manny Rayner , David Carter , Regius Professor Of Clinical Surgery David Carter , Pierrette Bouillon , Vassilis Digalakis , Mats Wirén

Nombre de pages: 360

This book presents a detailed description of Spoken Language Translator (SLT), one of the first major projects in the area of automatic speech translation. The SLT system can translate between English, French, and Swedish in the domain of air travel planning, using a vocabulary of about 1500 words, and with an accuracy of about 75 per cent. The greater part of the book describes the language processing components, which are largely built on top of the SRI Core Language Engine, using a combination of general grammars and techniques that allow them to be rapidly customized to specific domains. Speech recognition is based on Hidden Markov Mode technology, and uses versions of the SRI DECIPHER system. This account of the Spoken Language Translator should be an essential resource both for those who wish to know what is achievable in spoken-language translation today, and for those who wish to understand how to achieve it.
