Hammerstein’s Daughters

Auteure: Gottfried Paasche

Nombre de pages: 390

Historical consensus is largely unanimous in viewing the German nobility under the Weimar Republic as completely enthralled by fascism. In this enlightening chronicle of General Kurt von Hammerstein and his family, Hammerstein’s Daughters provides an important counter example to this paradigm. A staunch opponent of Hitler and his policies, Kurt von Hammerstein’s daughters, Marie Louise, Maria Therese, and Helga, notably renounced their status and privileges, enabling resistance to the Nazi regime through their support of persecuted Jews and the KPD intelligence service. By documenting the heroic efforts of these overlooked women, Gottfried Paasche offers a fascinating view of his family’s personal history which spotlights an alternative story of tradition, resistance, adaptation, and rebellion under National Socialism.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel

Auteure: Tim Carter

Nombre de pages: 169

Carousel (1945), with music by Richard Rodgers and the book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, was their second collaboration following the surprising success of Oklahoma! (1943). They worked again with Theresa Helburn and Lawrence Langner of the Theatre Guild (producers), Rouben Mamoulian (director), and Agnes de Mille (choreographer). But with Oklahoma! still running to sell-out houses, they needed to do something quite different. Based on a play, Liliom (1909), by the Hungarian playwright Ferenc Molnár, Carousel took Broadway musical theater in far darker directions because of its subject matter-the protagonist, Billy Bigelow, is wholly an anti-hero-and also given its extensive music that some claimed came close to opera. The action is shifted from a gritty working-class suburb of Budapest to the New England coast (Maine), but the themes remain the same as two social misfits try to survive harsh economic times. Billy Bigelow is unemployed, prone to domestic violence, and dies in the course of committing a robbery; Julie Jordan sticks by him through thick and thin; and the show seeks some manner of redemption for both of them as Billy is given a day back on earth to do some...

Rodgers & Hammerstein's The King and I

Nombre de pages: 182

The King and I opened on Broadway on March 29, 1951. The musical is based on a 1944 novel by Margaret Landon, Anna and the King of Siam, which in turn was adapted from the real-life reminiscences of Anna Leonowens, as recounted in her own books, The English Governess at the Siamese Court and The Romance of the Harem. It is 1862 in Siam when an English widow, Anna Leonowens, arrives with her young son at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many children and wives. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West, and he seeks Anna's assistance in changing his image, if not his ways. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and, eventually, respect one another in a truly unique love story. Along with the dazzling score, the incomparable Jerome Robbins ballet The Small House of Uncle Thomas is one of the all-time marvels of the musical stage.

Rodgers & Hammerstein's Carousel

Nombre de pages: 197

In a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, swaggering, carefree carnival barker Billy Bigelow captivates and marries naive millworker Julie Jordan. Billy loses his job just as he learns that Julie is pregnant, and – desperately intent upon providing a decent life for his family – he is coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Caught in the act and facing the certainty of prison, he takes his own life and is sent “up there.” Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day 15 years later, and he encounters the daughter he never knew. She is a lonely, friendless teenager, her father's reputation as a thief and bully having haunted her throughout her young life. How Billy instills a sense of hope and dignity in both the child and her mother is a dramatic testimony to the power of love. It's easy to understand why, of all the shows they created, Carousel was Rodgers and Hammerstein's personal favorite.

Hammerstein ou l'intransigeance

Auteure: Hans Magnus Enzensberger
