The Return of the State

The Return of the State

Auteure: Adam Harmes

Nombre de pages: 290

In this provocative book, Adam Harmes reveals how only effective political globalization can balance and hold in check the extremes of global corporations. Free trade agreements and economic globalization have created a gap between global transnational corporations and governments mired within national boundaries. Large corporations are now operating “above the law.” Return of the State takes us into the corporate boardrooms, government departments and international organizations where a new global compromise is being forged. It argues that political globalization is both necessary and likely, revealing what it will involve, and what it will mean for corporations, civil society and private citizens around the world. Return of the State is well-researched, hard hitting, controversial and prescient.

Auteure: A.m. Thompson

Nombre de pages: 174

He was in the break room, pacing when Detective Marcus came in and asked, "What's eatin you Saunders?" Francis spun around, "Oh I don't know Marcus!" He snapped, "Let's see, there's a little kid missing from her mother, dumb ass in there remembers the important things from the abduction because the mommy was 'hot' and I couldn't get to the crime scene because that goddamned Senator Jasper's beautification project has the road shut down! What would make you think something was wrong?" Marcus shook his head. "Sorry I asked," he said as he walked out of the room. Francis knew he could be overbearing but he couldn't figure out what would possess someone to ask such a ridiculous question, especially another cop. The last time he could remember feeling so helpless was when Amanda Marks went missing in 1998. She was taken right off her backyard swing set and now, another child had been abducted in broad daylight on a very busy Boston street. He had no idea how much worse it was about to get

Wired for Innovation

Wired for Innovation

Auteure: Erik Brynjolfsson , Adam Saunders

Nombre de pages: 175

Two experts on the information economy explore the true economic value of technology and innovation. A wave of business innovation is driving the productivity resurgence in the U.S. economy. In Wired for Innovation, Erik Brynjolfsson and Adam Saunders describe how information technology directly or indirectly created this productivity explosion, reversing decades of slow growth. They argue that the companies with the highest level of returns to their technology investment are doing more than just buying technology; they are inventing new forms of organizational capital to become digital organizations. These innovations include a cluster of organizational and business-process changes, including broader sharing of information, decentralized decision-making, linking pay and promotions to performance, pruning of non-core products and processes, and greater investments in training and education. Innovation continues through booms and busts. This book provides an essential guide for policy makers and economists who need to understand how information technology is transforming the economy and how it will create value in the coming decade.

Croissance, emploi et développement

Auteure: Dominique Foray , Jean Gadrey , Jérôme Gautié , Bernard Gazier , Dominique Guellec , Yannick L'horty

A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press’s new open access publishing program for monographs. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. In the last several years, much has been written about growing economic challenges, increasing income inequality, and political polarization in the United States. This book argues that lessons for addressing these national challenges are emerging from a new set of realities in America’s metropolitan regions: first, that inequity is, in fact, bad for economic growth; second, that bringing together the concerns of equity and growth requires concerted local action; and, third, that the fundamental building block for doing this is the creation of diverse and dynamic epistemic (or knowledge) communities, which help to overcome political polarization and help regions address the challenges of economic restructuring and social divides.

The Information Nexus

The Information Nexus

Auteure: Steven G. Marks

Nombre de pages: 265

Capitalism is central to our understanding of contemporary economic and political life and yet what does it really mean? If, as has now been shown to be the case, capital and property rights existed in pre-modern and pre-capitalist societies, what is left of our understanding of capitalism? Steven G. Marks' provocative new book calls into question everything we thought we knew about capitalism, from the word's very origins and development to the drivers of Western economic growth. Ranging from the Middle Ages to the present, The Information Nexus reveals that the truly distinctive feature of capitalism is business's drive to acquire and analyze information, supported by governments that allow unfettered access to public data. This new interpretation of capitalism helps to explain the rise of the West, puts our current information age into historical perspective, and provides a benchmark for the comparative assessment of economic systems in today's globalized environment.

Sniper Jackson

Sniper Jackson

Auteure: Frederick Sleath

Nombre de pages: 212

Although it reads as a novel, Sniper Jackson can be justifiably viewed as 'faction' weaving true events around a mythical character. This was a commonplace method of writing at a time when many serving or ex-soldiers did not want individuals or events in their books to be identified, and many used pseudonym's to conceal their identities. Sleath's work bears all the hallmarks of personal experience, in particular those small details of trench life and the insights into the close-knit camaraderie commonly found in specialist units that only those who have experienced it could know. Indeed, the book was praised for its accuracy by one of the pioneers of British trench sniping, Major Frederick Crum, in his own Memoirs of a Rifleman Scout. It would be a mistake to dismiss such literature as imagination or fabrication, bearing little relationship to reality. The truth is that such books actually contain a wealth of information and Sniper Jackson is a unique piece of eyewitness history about a rarely discussed element of warfare on the Western Front in the First World War.

Innovation Economics

Innovation Economics

Auteure: Robert D. Atkinson , Stephen J. Ezell

Nombre de pages: 544

This important book delivers a critical wake-up call: a fierce global race for innovation advantage is under way, and while other nations are making support for technology and innovation a central tenet of their economic strategies and policies, America lacks a robust innovation policy. What does this portend? Robert Atkinson and Stephen Ezell, widely respected economic thinkers, report on profound new forces that are shaping the global economy—forces that favor nations with innovation-based economies and innovation policies. Unless the United States enacts public policies to reflect this reality, Americans face the relatively lower standards of living associated with a noncompetitive national economy. The authors explore how a weak innovation economy not only contributed to the Great Recession but is delaying America's recovery from it and how innovation in the United States compares with that in other developed and developing nations. Atkinson and Ezell then lay out a detailed, pragmatic road map for America to regain its global innovation advantage by 2020, as well as maximize the global supply of innovation and promote sustainable globalization.

The Life and Music of Eric Coates

Auteure: Michael Payne

Nombre de pages: 296

Eric Coates (1886-1957) is perhaps the most familiar name associated with British light music. Sir Charles Groves said that 'his music crackled with enthusiasm and vitality. He could write tunes and clothe them in the most attractive musical colours'. Coates won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, and from 1912 to 1919 he was principal viola of the Queen's Hall Orchestra under Sir Henry Wood. He also played under such conductors as Elgar, Delius, Richard Strauss, Debussy, and Beecham. It was, however, as a composer of orchestral music that he found his greatest success. Beginning with the Miniature Suite, written for the 1911 Promenade Concerts, he forged an enviable reputation as a composer. By the 1920s and 1930s, he was one of the most popular and highest-paid British composers, with a string of popular works flowing from his pen. Coates' music has become indelibly entwined with such popular radio programmes as the BBC's In Town Tonight, which was introduced by the 'Knightsbridge' March and Desert Island Discs whose signature tune for the past forty years has been By the Sleepy Lagoon. Perhaps his most memorable work was his march for the Dam Busters film. Michael...
