Mathematical Systems Theory

Mathematical Systems Theory

Auteure: G. Marchesini , S. K. Mitter

Nombre de pages: 411

This volume is the record of lectures delivered at the Conference on Mathematical System Theory during the summer of 1975. The conference was held at the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences in Udine, Italy, and was supported by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Richerche of Italy and the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences. The aim of the conference was to encourage fruitful and active collaboration between researchers working in the diverse areas of system theory. It was also the hope of the organizers that mathematicians participating in the conference might become interested in the purely mathematical problems being raised by systems theory as a result of their participation. The success of the conference is to be measured by the extent to which these aims were fulfilled. Besides the formal programme of lectures recorded in this volume, many informal seminars were held. The cafes of Udine were often the scene of rich and varied discussions of recent developments in the field amongst the participants of the conference. Last but not least, listening to the ideas exposed in the lectures of others in a creative atmosphere was an important activity.

Auteure: F. Gremy , P. Degoulet , B. Barber , R. Salamon

Nombre de pages: 976

The European Federation for Medical Informatics has established itself as a regional body coordinating activity in medical informatics. The Congress in Toulouse, MIE-81, from 9 - 13 March 1981, is the third congress in the ser ies following MIE-78 in Cambr idge, and MIB-79 in Berlin with a gap during 1980 for the world congress MEDINFO-80 in Tokyo. The rationale behind all these congresses is the scientific need to share results and ideas and the educational need to train a wide variety of professional staff in the potential of health care and medical informatics. All the caring professions are involved, doctors, scientists, nurses, para-medical staff, administrators, health care planners, community physicians, epidemiologists, statisticians, operations analysts together with specialists from the computing profession dealing with system analysis, hardware, software, languages, data-bases and the marketing of systems. Medical Informatics is a very wide subject with ramifications throughout the health care and preventive services; it offers a key to the monitoring and improvement of patient care and to the provision of a healthier environment. The collection and evaluation of...

Random Vibration and Spectral Analysis/Vibrations aléatoires et analyse spectral

Random Vibration and Spectral Analysis/Vibrations aléatoires et analyse spectral

Auteure: A. Preumont

Nombre de pages: 272

I became interested in Random Vibration during the preparation of my PhD dissertation, which was concerned with the seismic response of nuclear reactor cores. I was initiated into this field through the cla.ssical books by Y.K.Lin, S.H.Crandall and a few others. After the completion of my PhD, in 1981, my supervisor M.Gera.din encouraged me to prepare a course in Random Vibration for fourth and fifth year students in Aeronautics, at the University of Liege. There was at the time very little material available in French on that subject. A first draft was produced during 1983 and 1984 and revised in 1986. These notes were published by the Presses Poly techniques et Universitaires Romandes (Lausanne, Suisse) in 1990. When Kluwer decided to publish an English translation ofthe book in 1992, I had to choose between letting Kluwer translate the French text in-extenso or doing it myself, which would allow me to carry out a sustantial revision of the book. I took the second option and decided to rewrite or delete some of the original text and include new material, based on my personal experience, or reflecting recent technical advances. Chapter 6, devoted to the response of multi degree...

Vii FOREWORD TO THE ENGLISH EDITION The lectures which I gave at the University of Chicago ix It is an unusual pleasure to present Professor Heisen in the spring of 1929 afforded me the opportunity of re berg's Chicago lectures on "The Physical Principles of viewing the fundamental principles of quantum theory. the Quantum Theory" to a wider audience than could Since the conclusive studies of Bohr in 1927 there have attend them when they were originally delivered. Pro been no essential changes in these principles, and many fessor Heisenberg's leading place in the development of new experiments have confirmed important consequences the new quantum mechanics is well recognized by those of the theory (for example, the Raman effect). But even who have been following its growth. It was in fact he who today the physicist more often has a kind of faith in the first saw clearly that in the older forms of quantum theory we were describing our spectra in terms of atomic mecha correctness of the new principles than a clear understa- nisms regarding which we could gain no definite knowl ing of them. For this reason the publication of these C- cago lectures in the form of a small book seems...

The Kowalevski Property

The Kowalevski Property

Auteure: Vadim B. Kuznetsov

Nombre de pages: 232

This book is a collection of survey articles on several topics related to the general notion of integrability. It stems from a workshop on ''Mathematical Methods of Regular Dynamics'' dedicated to Sophie Kowalevski. Leading experts introduce corresponding areas in depth. The book provides a broad overview of research, from the pioneering work of the nineteenth century to the developments of the 1970s through the present. The book begins with two historical papers by R. L. Cooke onKowalevski's life and work. Following are 15 research surveys on integrability issues in differential and algebraic geometry, classical complex analysis, discrete mathematics, spinning tops, Painleve equations, global analysis on manifolds, special functions, etc. It concludes with Kowalevski's famouspaper published in Acta Mathematica in 1889, ''Sur le probleme de la rotation d'un corps solide autour d'un point fixe''. The book is suitable for graduate students in pure and applied mathematics, the general mathematical audience studying integrability, and research mathematicians interested in differential and algebraic geometry, analysis, and special functions.

The Andrews Festschrift

The Andrews Festschrift

Auteure: Dominique Foata , Guo-niu Han

Nombre de pages: 426

This book contains seventeen contributions made to George Andrews on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday, ranging from classical number theory (the theory of partitions) to classical and algebraic combinatorics. Most of the papers were read at the 42nd session of the Sminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire that took place at Maratea, Basilicata, in August 1998. This volume contains a long memoir on Ramanujan's Unpublished Manuscript and the Tau functions studied with a contemporary eye, together with several papers dealing with the theory of partitions. There is also a description of a maple package to deal with general q-calculus. More subjects on algebraic combinatorics are developed, especially the theory of Kostka polynomials, the ice square model, the combinatorial theory of classical numbers, a new approach to determinant calculus.
