Motives were introduced in the mid-1960s by Grothendieck to explain the analogies among the various cohomology theories for algebraic varieties, to play the role of the missing rational cohomology, and to provide a blueprint for proving Weil's conjectures about the zeta function of a variety over a finite field. Over the last ten years or so, researchers in various areas--Hodge theory, algebraic $K$-theory, polylogarithms, automorphic forms, $L$-functions, $\ell$-adic representations, trigonometric sums, and algebraic cycles--have discovered that an enlarged (and in part conjectural) theory of ``mixed'' motives indicates and explains phenomena appearing in each area. Thus the theory holds the potential of enriching and unifying these areas. This is one of two volumes containing the revised texts of nearly all the lectures presented at the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Motives, held in Seattle, in 1991. A number of related works are also included, making for a total of forty-seven papers, from general introductions to specialized surveys to research papers.

Since the subject of Groups of Self-Equivalences was first discussed in 1958 in a paper of Barcuss and Barratt, a good deal of progress has been achieved. This is reviewed in this volume, first by a long survey article and a presentation of 17 open problems together with a bibliography of the subject, and by a further 14 original research articles.

This volume is an offspring of the special semester "Ergodic Theory, Geometric Rigidity and Number Theory" held at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge, UK, from January until July, 2000. Some of the major recent developments in rigidity theory, geometric group theory, flows on homogeneous spaces and Teichmüller spaces, quasi-conformal geometry, negatively curved groups and spaces, Diophantine approximation, and bounded cohomology are presented here. The authors have given special consideration to making the papers accessible to graduate students, with most of the contributions starting at an introductory level and building up to presenting topics at the forefront in this active field of research. In the past thirty years, differential geometry has undergone an enormous change with infusion of topology, Lie theory, complex analysis, algebraic geometry and partial differential equations. Professor Matsushima played a leading role in this transformation by bringing new techniques of Lie groups and Lie algebras into the study of real and complex manifolds.
