Slash and Char as Alternative to Slash and Burn

Slash and Char as Alternative to Slash and Burn

Auteure: Christoph Steiner

Nombre de pages: 189

The extraordinary fertility of manmade Terra Preta soils in the Brazilian Amazon provided the incentive to study the effects of soil charcoal amendments on soil fertility, nutrient cycling, and soil biology. The existence of Terra Preta suggests that tropical soils, which are notorious for being infertile, can be greatly improved. The agricultural produces charcoal out of fallow vegetation instead of converting it to carbon dioxide through burning. Slash and char improves soil quality by transferring organic carbon into recalcitrant soil organic matter pools. This newly described agricultural practice has important implications for the earth's carbon budget and sustainability in tropical agriculture.

Bodymore Zero

Bodymore Zero

Auteure: Ian Kirkpatrick , M.m. Morris

Nombre de pages: 313

You Don't Invite the Devil in by Chance; You Must Play with Intent. Taking place ten years before the events of Bleed More, Bodymore, Ralph Reagan is the drummer for his best friend's band, Bad Ass Idiot Train. Baltimore locals know it for the unique sound, the wild concerts, and the even wilder frontman, KC. The two are as close as brothers, but couldn't be more different. Ralph is quiet, laidback, and doesn't seem to fit in with the lifestyle while the only appropriate way to describe KC is hellion. Riots, street brawls, and fierce resistance to authority leaves a path of destruction in KC's wake. While trouble can be avoided for a time, it can't be entirely dodged. The ghosts of KC's past haunt him through the handprints left in his house, the voices in his head, and the way Baltimore calls out to him in the graffiti. The voices call endlessly, hoping to tempt KC into killing the person beside him who doesn't belong. Rage and regret guide his hands to Ralph's neck after a concert. His saving grace is KC's defiance. Ralph escapes with his life, but KC does not. Ralph's mourning the loss of his brother and the only family he's ever known when he receives a phone call from the...

Medical Foods from Natural Sources

Medical Foods from Natural Sources

Auteure: Meera Kaur

Nombre de pages: 224

Currently most published books on enteral nutrition support focus only on issues such as the rationale; specific nutrient requirements for various disease conditions; and practical approaches to the delivery, monitoring, and complications preventions while providing enteral nutrition support. None offer information relating to the developmental aspects of enteral foods, e.g. processing technology, types of ingredients, physicochemical and nutritional characteristics, shelf life evaluations, etc. These aspects are critical because they affect the overall acceptability, tolerance, and effectiveness of enteral nutrition support. Medical Foods from Natural Sources discusses the development of the enteral foods from the natural sources for the patients, such as barley, rice, eggs, milk, etc., and presents methods on how to prepare enteral foods from natural sources for use. The book fills the gap in the literature by discussing the history of enteral nutrition; interpreting the statistics regarding worldwide need for enteral nutrition support and cost involved; enumerating the processing technology to develop natural ingredients-based enteral foods; and describing the results of...

Applied Reliability, Third Edition

Applied Reliability, Third Edition

Auteure: Paul A. Tobias , David Trindade

Nombre de pages: 602

Since the publication of the second edition of Applied Reliability in 1995, the ready availability of inexpensive, powerful statistical software has changed the way statisticians and engineers look at and analyze all kinds of data. Problems in reliability that were once difficult and time consuming even for experts can now be solved with a few well-chosen clicks of a mouse. However, software documentation has had difficulty keeping up with the enhanced functionality added to new releases, especially in specialized areas such as reliability analysis. Using analysis capabilities in spreadsheet software and two well-maintained, supported, and frequently updated, popular software packages—Minitab and SAS JMP—the third edition of Applied Reliability is an easy-to-use guide to basic descriptive statistics, reliability concepts, and the properties of lifetime distributions such as the exponential, Weibull, and lognormal. The material covers reliability data plotting, acceleration models, life test data analysis, systems models, and much more. The third edition includes a new chapter on Bayesian reliability analysis and expanded, updated coverage of repairable system modeling. Taking...
