William Forsythe’s Postdramatic Dance Theater

William Forsythe’s Postdramatic Dance Theater

Auteure: Freya Vass

Nombre de pages: 274

This book takes choreographer William Forsythe’s choreographic and scenographic processes as a holistic lens through which to view dance as a fundamentally visuo-sonic art form and choreography as a form of perceptual experimentation. In doing so, it reveals how the made worlds within which postdramatic dance is situated influence how choreography is perceived. Resonating with ecological perspectives but also drawing on an extensive range of cognitive research approaches, the volume’s choreo-scenographic perspective emphasizes the importance of considering the expanded scenography of lighting, sound, space, scenic elements, costume, and performer movement when analyzing the sensory and cognitive perception of dance. The volume provides a first book-length cognitive study of both an individual choreographer and the aesthetics of postdramatic theatre. It also satisfies a need for more dedicated scholarship on Forsythe, whose extensive and varied array of groundbreaking ballets and dance theater works for the Ballett Frankfurt (1984-2004), The Forsythe Company (2005-15), and as an independent choreographer have made him a key figure in 20th/21st century dance.

July the third 1863 it seems, will forever be associated with an event known by almost everyone as "Pickett's Charge" . . . the day more than 12,000 officers and men in Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia charged forward at the Union defenses at Gettysburg. Almost since that day onward, the label given to that assault has focused on the commander of less than half of the troops who made the attack-Major General George Pickett. Pickett whose Division constituted only three of the nine brigades in the afternoon assault has become the namesake of the entire effort. Now, the story is told of the men from North Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama who made that charge.

Processing Choreography

Processing Choreography

Auteure: Elizabeth Waterhouse

Nombre de pages: 343

Told from the perspective of the dancers, »Processing Choreography: Thinking with William Forsythe's Duo« is an ethnography that reconstructs the dancers' activity within William Forsythe's Duo project. The book is written legibly for readers in dance studies, the social sciences, and dance practice. Considering how the choreography of Duo emerged through practice and changed over two decades of history (1996-2018), Elizabeth Waterhouse offers a nuanced picture of creative cooperation and institutionalized process. She presents a compelling vision of choreography as a nexus of people, im/material practices, contexts, and relations. As a former Forsythe dancer herself, the author provides novel insights into this choreographic community.

Selling the Fountain of Youth

Selling the Fountain of Youth

Auteure: Arlene Weintraub

Nombre de pages: 201

The beauty industry -- which once revolved around creams and powders, subtle agents to enhance beauty -- has become the anti-aging industry, overrun with steroids, human growth hormone injections, and "bio-identical" hormones -- all promoted as "cures"; for getting old. Acclaimed BusinessWeek science reporter Arlene Weintraub takes us inside this world, from the marketing departments of huge pharmaceutical companies to the backroom of your local pharmacy, from celebrity enthusiasts like Suzanne Somers and Oprah to the self-medicating doctors who run chains of rejuvenation centers, all claiming that we deserve to be forever young -- and promising to show us how. Weintraub reveals the shady practices that run rampant when junk science and dubious marketing meet consumer choice. She shows for the remarkable economic and cultural impact of anti-aging medicine, on the patients who partake and on the rest of us. It's not a pretty story, but Weintraub tells us everything we need to know to avoid being duped by this billion-dollar -- and dangerous -- hoax.

Body Impossible

Body Impossible

Auteure: Ariel Osterweis

Nombre de pages: 265

Body Impossible theorizes the concept of virtuosity in contemporary dance and performance through a study of the career of dancer Desmond Richardson. Focusing on Richardson's creative insistence on improvisatory fun and excellence throughout the decades approaching the millennium (shaped by Reaganism, the Culture Wars, the AIDS epidemic, the New Jim Crow, and MTV), this book brings dance into conversation with paradigms of blackness, queerness, masculinity, and class in order to generate a socio-culturally attentive understanding of virtuosity.

Le réel à l'épreuve des technologies

Le réel à l'épreuve des technologies

Auteure: Collectif

Living the Family Dream

Living the Family Dream

Auteure: Albert Brinkworth

Nombre de pages: 328

I was about 12 years old in 1946 when the “Brinkworth Family” home-based, kitchen table business was founded, where wooden, hand-built model railway buildings were constructed for the Bassett-Lowke retail store in Manchester England. My story chronicles our early years in the UK, and later the family’s immigration to Canada, and the re-establishing of the family model business here in British Columbia in 1966. At that point in time, the direction of Brinkworth Models took a dramatic turn, as we were propelled unexpectantly, into the colorful world of Motorsports. The next 26 memorable years could only be described as a rollercoaster, and is featured in great detail in “Living the Family Dream - The Brinkworth Models Story.
