Nombre de pages: 616

The volumes Advances in Psychological Science are the most timely reviews for a person who wants an up-to-date "state-of-the-art" description of selected topics in psychology. These volumes will be useful for the graduate student to get a perspective on the latest developments in psychology today. The chapters are written in a non-technical manner, i.e., not for the specialist, but for the educated psychologist who wishes to see developments across the spectrum of psychology. They may be used for teaching or by experts who wish an overview of recent advances in their science. The chapters uniquely reflect the international or global character of psychology, both in the authors selected to write them, and in their coverage of research from around the world. Volume 1 contains original contributions to the social, personal, and cultural aspects of the discipline.

The Scientific View of Sport

Auteure: O. Grupe , D. Kurz , M. Teipel

Nombre de pages: 288

progress and happiness - however these terms may be understood in detail - as a significant and constitutive element of scientific inquiry. In this sense the question of the way in which sport really benefits people and contributes to their happiness, and under which individual and social conditions, is a scientific question. It assumes special significance when the fact is taken into account that in the field of sport science a general scepticism is shown towards those dogmas and pedagogical theses which take such an interpretation for granted in the absence of a firm empirical foundation and a critically evolved theory. Sport and Sport Science Sport and exercise, physical culture and education in sport (physical training), gymnastics and touring combined with some form of sport are-as the present report distinctly shows-all over the world among the most striking social phenom ena of today. At first sight they seem to be uncomplicated, clear and comprehensible for everybody; they stand for a type of solidarity which is independent of differences in ideological-political outlook, and sometimes exhibit an almost archaic intensity and attraction; they are supported by the active...

The Emergence of the Modern Language Sciences: Historiographical perspectives

Auteure: Sheila M. Embleton , John Earl Joseph , Hans-josef Niederehe

Nombre de pages: 376

Although it is widely thought that structural linguistics began abruptly with the publication of Saussure's 'revolutionary' "Course in General Linguistics," the work of E. F. K. Koerner has demonstrated that Saussure, for all his originality, remained true to the basic tenets of his 19th-century predecessors. In this volume, the development of modern linguistics before, during and after Saussure is traced in 20 studies honouring the scholar who has done more than anyone else to professionalize linguistic historiography during the last quarter century. Among the wide range of topics covered are: grammar and philosophy in the age of comparativism, the relation of Saussure's anagram studies to his theory of the linguistic sign, nationalist overtones in German linguistics from 1914 to 1945, and the true story (with newly discovered documentation) of why Chomsky's "Logical Structure of Linguistic Theory" didn't get published during the 1950s or 60s. In addition to an introductory overview of Koerner's career and a complete listing of his publications, the volume includes previously unpublished materials from Saussure's notebooks.

Comment l'amour empoisonne les femmes

Auteure: Peggy Sastre

Political, economic and social barriers among Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada are giving way to global forces and the "global dreams" they inspire. This collection of original articles and essays examines popular culture, literature, theatre, belief systems, indigenous practices and questions of identity, exile and alienation. The interconnectedness and distinction of cultural production throughout the Americas, "transplanted" interests, the mediation of African and European influences, and the expression of shifting identities, all reflect the development of a new American neighbourhood.
