In the 1980s and 1990s long-term worklessness soared - with a more than doubling of the numbers on long-term sickness benefits and significant increases in the number of lone parents out of work. The worst increases were during the recessions. Government action since then has included the New Deals, extra support and help, but also stronger conditions on benefit claimants to seek work or prepare for work in future as part of our ongoing welfare reforms. This "something for something" approach has helped bring worklessness down and prevent some of the problems seen in previous recessions. The Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region has proved to be relatively resilient in the face of increased debt stress, stubborn inflation, and uncertainty arising from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Income and employment have largely recovered from the pandemic, poverty has receded, and markets remain guardedly optimistic about the near future. However, global uncertainty is rising, including a recent wave of bank failures in the US and Europe. Strengthening resilience, both on the health and macroeconomic fronts, will be paramount. Progress remains pending in both vaccination coverage and health system preparedness, while the institutionality of macroeconomic policy in some countries is being questioned. The evolution of the global economy is providing two new areas of opportunity for the region: the trend toward nearshoring-moving production closer to the US and European markets-and the imperative to combat climate change, which is giving the region a new comparative advantage in sun, wind, hydro, and natural capital. The Nakshatras are one of the oldest references we have to astrology from the Rig Veda, dating back to about 5,000 years ago. The Vedas are the religious scriptures of the great seers and sages of India and the Nakshatras are like the zodiac signs but more specific. Their meanings are derived from the constellations, fixed stars and the mythology behind these portions in the sky. Many people have become very rich in the commodity markets. It is one of a few investment areas where an individual with limited capital can make extraordinary profits in a relatively short period of time. Commodities are agreements to buy and sell virtually anything that is harvested except onions. (A 1958 federal law prohibits trading onions.) Such goods are raw or partly refined materials whose value mainly reflects the costs of finding or gathering them. They are traded for processing or incorporation into final goods. Examples are crude oil, cotton, rubber, grains, and metals and other minerals. Since it is impractical to transport these bulky, often perishable materials, what is actually traded are commodities futures contracts, or options, that are agreements to buy or sell at an agreed upon price on a specific date.
